This study analyzes the concept of pre-texts, which has had insufficient research, and examines its meanings and functions. In analyzing the pre-text concept, the study structuralized it into a transformative stage structure and functional hierarchy structure model and used them as grounds to delve into pre-texts. A transformative stage structure is an approach arguing that the meanings and forms of pre-texts are transformed according to design stages. For this reason, the definitions of pre-texts can be broad or differ from one another, which raises a need for consensus on the terms. A functional hierarchy structure structuralizes the functions required from pre-texts in four layers, offering a theoretical framework to consult in the design and improvement of effective pre-texts. An examination of pre-texts is also connected to the principles of drama as well as pre-texts, which implies that an in-depth examination of pre-texts can promote the essential understanding of dramas.
